All You Need is Love

The Beatles were close to being profound when they sang, “All you need is love.”

There has been so much hatred, anger, fear, and sadness in the events of the past few days. There is only one solution, and that is love. Love is the only thing that conquers hatred, deflates anger, calms fear, and comforts sadness. All we need is love, but not selfish, jealous, inappropriate, impulsive, or insincere love. We need a special kind of love. A love that is humble, patient, steadfast, and genuine. A love that puts others first. A love that goes out of its way and makes sacrifices for others.

A love that was manifested 2,000 years ago when a man from Galilee was (ironically) wrongfully executed by the authorities. A man who had an unstoppable army at his disposal but who chose instead to submit to his execution – for the sake of love. A love that enables a Christian to call his neighbor “brother” be that brother rich, poor, black, white, Mexican, or American.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” -John 14:15

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” -John 15:12

“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” -Matthew 22:37-39

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16

There is only one solution, and that is love. Only people radically changed by and actively demonstrating love can put an end to all this madness.
