Unless Jesus Christ decides to coincide his return with the 58th quadrennial U.S. presidential election, the world will not end on November 8, 2016. This time next year (barring a miracle, major catastrophe, or the return of Christ) either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will be president of the United States of America. Having either of two such depraved persons as our president is a frightening thought, indeed. As someone put it, “Either way, America loses.”
However, what is far scarier is the knowledge that we live in a country where people like Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton could win their respective party’s nomination. That is a definite sign of how far we have fallen in our national depravity. The people that elected men like George Washington and John Adams would not recognize the country we have become. And the country we have become cannot last long, for we no longer have a solid foundation.
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” -John Adams
“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” -Alexis de Tocqueville
We are in dire straits. We are certainly doomed if we continue down this road. We cannot sit idly on the sidelines, wiling away the hours until we can finally make a statement on November 8. No, we must take action now!
If this was a battle against flesh and blood, the cry would be, “On your feet, man, and let us fight to the last breath!” But since this is a spiritual battle, our cry instead must be, “On your knees, friend! Let us repent!”
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” -2 Chronicles 7:14
Too long have we let evil grow unchecked in the world around us. Too long have we clung to sins ourselves. But it is not too late.
“The word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.” -Jonah 3:6-10
Friends, Christians, Americans, we must repent! If God could spare Nineveh when they repented, can He not do the same for us?
Let us pray for our country and for our leaders. If God could make such an apostle out of Paul, could He not radically change Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton? If he could change my heart and your heart, could He not change the hearts of our countrymen?
Let us fall to our knees and repent and pray – and then jump to our feet and proclaim the only message that can change people!
I challenged my 4th-5th grade Sunday School class to find one person each week that they didn’t know and to share the gospel with them. Last week, one of my brave 4th grade boys shared the gospel with a stranger at a soccer game. He was nervous, he was scared, but with God’s help he did it.
Can I do the same?
I let so many opportunities to witness pass me by, such as when the cashier asks me, “How are you?” What I could say is something like, “Saved, by the grace of God. How are you?” But I don’t. Every single day I miss these opportunities with the delivery guy, the mailman, the waitress, the receptionist, the person in line next to me. I challenge myself and I challenge you: take every opportunity to witness.
On your knees, friend, and let us repent. On your feet, friend, and let us shine the light!
