Teach Me

I don’t understand why joy turns to sorrow. I don’t understand why hearts break and hopes are disappointed. I don’t understand why good things are taken away and bad things won’t leave. I don’t understand why any of this is happening.

My eyes cannot see any good coming out of any of this. My mind cannot fathom what the point of this might be.

But I know You are in control. I know You are just, merciful, loving, and wise.

I do not understand. But I know You are trustworthy. Teach me to trust You more. Keep me from doubting You when the grief overwhelms me.

My faith is so small. Grow me through this.

Teach me to love You truly.

Teach me to hold everything with open hands.

Teach me to find my joy in You.

Teach me to fix my eyes on what I cannot see.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:16-18

When tomorrow comes and my world seems to shatter, hold on to me.

Mold me into someone who can rejoice in all circumstances. Dwell in my heart forever and keep me from despair.

O Lord, my God. My rock. My redeemer. My strong and mighty Father, let this present sorrow teach me the depth of Your love.

O Father, You are sovereign
In all the worlds You made;
Your mighty Word was spoken,
And light and life obeyed.
Your voice commands the seasons
And bounds the ocean’s shore,
Sets stars within their courses
And stills the tempests’ roar.

O Father, You are sovereign
In all affairs of man;
No powers of death or darkness
Can thwart Your perfect plan.
All chance and change transcending,
Supreme in time and space,
You hold your trusting children
Secure in Your embrace.

O Father, You are sovereign
The Lord of human pain,
Transmuting earthly sorrows
To gold of heavenly gain,
All evil overruling,
As none but Conqueror could,
Your love pursues its purpose—
Our souls’ eternal good.

O Father, You are sovereign!
We see You dimly now,
But soon before Your triumph
Earth’s every knee shall bow.
With this glad hope before us
Our faith springs forth anew:
Our Sovereign Lord and Savior,
We trust and worship You!
